A tragedy such as this was experienced from many perspectives. From those at ground zero to those connected through a TV screen. This proposal aims to provide several vantage points in order to gain alternate perspectives of the one event. Starting from a distance one can visually connect with the memorial, then moving closer along the bridge they can gain different vantage points sweeping from one side of the river to the other and circling back around behind the central memorial.
The bridge then urges the viewer out into the centre of the river so to slip between the large vertical plates. Made from the rubble and recycled building materials from the aftermath of the quake, the plates look to symbolize strength, control and the growing and changing future.
The monument aims to both, suggest that it was once whole and but still stands fractured, and also to give one a sense of isolation, providing only glimpses to the context outside. Visually connected but physically isolated while confined by the vertical blades. A sensation mirrored by viewers on the circling bridges.
